New Work In Progress – “Blackbird”
I have begun a new work, titled “Blackbird”. This is a piece on canvas, 24″x30″, and will be done in oil. It is another figurative work, which will be part of a larger body of work which aims to be a visual representation of the parts of human experience that are difficult to express. This new work took quite a bit of time to sketch out. It does not appear that there is actually much to sketch, but I am very particular about every element in my paintings. It can take a bit of time to get everything just right as I envision it. I also spend a lot of time simply sitting and looking at the piece as I sketch it. I do this with every piece; there are a million things to think about as a piece progresses! I used to feel like I was wasting time this way, until I read about another artist that does this. Contemporary German artist Martin Eder, who’s figurative paintings I’ve been an admirer of, says he often spends more time sitting and thinking about a painting than actually painting! I don’t think this is time wasted, I think every piece of art requires a large intellectual investment. Check back soon to see this new work completed!
